Promeris: New Flea and Tick Monthly Preventive

Over the last several years as a veterinarian, I have seen more and more of my clients having a difficult time controlling fleas and ticks on their dogs with the currently available products. It is frustrating for me as a veterinarian and more importantly for our four legged companions not to be able to completely eliminate the problem.

Fleas and ticks aren’t just annoying parasites but they cause and carry diseases. Some dogs are extremely allergic to just a single bite from a flea and can itch for weeks around the base of the tail. Also, ticks carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichia, and Lyme disease.

The staff and I at the Kelsey Canine Medical Center are excited to announce that we are recommending a new topical monthly flea and tick prevention called Promeris by Fort Dodge. The new chemical acting as the flea preventive is called metaflumizone. Fleas have never been exposed to anything like it and are highly susceptible. It kills fleas by blocking the nerve transduction resulting in their paralysis and death. It provides effective flea control for up to 6 weeks. Promeris also combines the well recognized and proven compound, amitraz, as the effective tick control agent. Amitraz begins exerting its effects on ticks within 24 hours- reducing chances of disease transmission- and lasts for up to 4 weeks.

Key Features:

  1. Price will be equivalent to what you’ve paid for similar products in the past.

  2. Recommend apply monthly on the shoulder blades and neck (do not spread over the back).

  3. We recommend flea and tick prevention for most pets from March through late Fall. Some may need application year round depending on where you live and where you take them.

  4. It is waterproof. Although I still would not apply it 2 days before or 2 days after a bath. Swimming will not diminish the efficacy of the product.

  5. Promeris has a pleasant eucalyptus smell and a little more volume than other products.
As the areas’ only canine exclusive practice, we want you to realize the staff and I are always looking for better ways to enhance the lives of our patients so they can enrich your life every day. As one of our goals, we want to provide you with the most current medications available. Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to care for your best friend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kelsey and Staff
